The Legion most people don’t see!
Ask most people what the American Legion is, and they’ll point to a bar. A canteen. A place to grab a drink.
Let me set the record straight. The Canteen is not the Legion. It never was.
A Canteen is a fundraiser — nothing more. Some posts run one. Many don’t. It’s a post-level choice, and it’s the smallest part of who we are. The Legion doesn’t even recognize the canteen above the post, because the Canteen was never the mission.
So let me tell you what the Legion actually is:
- We’re the ones who fold the flag. We’re the rifle volley at the graveside, the bugle playing Taps while a widow holds a triangle of stars and stripes against her chest.
- We’re the hands laying flags on veterans’ graves before you fire up the grill on Memorial Day — thousands of them, one at a time, so no one who served is ever forgotten.
- We’re the honor guard standing in the rain because a brother earned it.
- We sit across the table from a veteran buried in VA paperwork, and we file that claim — for free — and we fight until the benefits he earned finally come through.
- We hand scholarships to kids who thought college was out of reach.
- We give. Quietly. Constantly. To families, to first responders, to the community around us.
- And when the meetings are over, we go to Washington. We stand in those halls and demand what our veterans were promised — their healthcare, their care for toxic exposure, an end to veteran suicide, the education they were owed. We don’t ask. We fight.
That is the American Legion.
Not a bar. Not a beer.
A promise — still being kept, generation after generation.
So the next time someone tells you the Legion is just a Canteen, tell them the truth.
We’re the ones who never stopped serving.

OUR POST WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1938 IN MEMORY OF
RAYMOND E. WALTON,
THE FIRST CASUALTY OF WORLD WAR I (1918) FROM SEABROOK, N.H.
Since our charter in 1938, our American Legion Post has been welcoming VETERANS from all branches of our Armed Forces. Today, we continue to welcome all military personnel serving our country. Joining our Post enables you to continue serving your God, Country and Community. Our mission is to implement the goals, aspirations, dreams, peace and blessings for our country, friends and families embodied in our Preamble.
OUR POST BECAME NON-SMOKING IN 2015
The Officers and Legion members in attendance at a monthly meeting in 2015 voted to make our Post non-smoking and non-vaping, and we were one of the first Posts in NH to do so. Smoking is now only permitted in the "Pavilion" picnic area outside the Canteen back door and the parking lot. We are happy to ensure a safer environment for the health of our members and guests.
